Similar to the other cities in Holland, the city council of Haarlem decided to produce so-called ‘Vroedschapspenningen’. These city council tokens were presented to members attending the city-council meetings, represented a significant value through their silver-content and could later be redeemed with the city treasurer. The minting of these city-council tokens had a prestige element to it as well; symbolic imagery related to Haarlem was chosen. The city is known for its role in the development of the modern printing press and their mythical role at the siege of Damiate in 1218. According to legend, a ship from Haarlem was decked out with a saw to break the blockade by sawing through the chain.
