Beautiful TOP POP example of an 8 Reales cob coin minted in Madrid during the reign of Philip V. This peninsular “macuquina” stands out for the right angles at which it was cut to achieve the correct weight; it also retains part of the original luster these coins had, something that isvery rare to observe. The strike of this piece also allows us to identify the main elements of this type of coin such as mint, assayer, denomination or date, details that, depending on their visibility, add more or less value to these coins, which at Numismática La Dobla we know and work with extensively.
Last but not least, the coin is encapsulated by NGC as AU58, the grade just below Mint State (MS), indicating that the coin appears as if freshly minted. Achieving a grade that would be equivalent to EBC+ in the Spanish scale, “without adjectives” (such as cleaning, environmental or sea damage, etc.) on this type of coin isextremely difficult and makes this piece stand out above many others due to its rarity as recorded by Jarabo and Sanahuja, who briefly reference some Philip V issues in their work on Peninsular Silver from the Habsburgs, assigning a rarity level of R1, meaning that fewer than 10 specimens of this type are known.
For all these reasons, this coin is a fantastic acquisitionfor any collector focused on Bourbon coinage or high preservation grades in such difficult issues as hammered/cob coins.
