Obverse:
A classical female figure, draped and holding a sword in her right hand, stands resolutely before a ruined wall. Her left hand rests on a block bearing the monogram “AW” (for Armand Wissaert). In the background, the silhouette of Antwerp Cathedral. Inscription: “ANVERS RETIENT SEPT DIVISIONS ALLEMANDES – 22 SEPTRE 10 OCT 1914”.
Reverse:
Three allegorical female figures representing the Belgian army joining the Allied forces. The central figure is greeted in a gesture of solidarity. Inscription: “L'ARMÉE BELGE REJOINT LES ARMÉES ALLIÉES – 7-14 OCTOBRE MCMXIV”.
Historical Context:
This medal, designed by Belgian sculptor Armand Wissaert, commemorates the defense of Antwerp in 1914, where Belgian forces held off seven German divisions for over two weeks during the opening phase of World War I. This strategic delay disrupted the German timetable and allowed Allied forces to better prepare on the Western Front. The reverse celebrates the unification of the Belgian and Allied armies shortly afterward
