Napoleon was crowned Emperor of the French in Notre-Dame de Paris by Pope Pius VII, though Napoleon famously placed the crown on his own head to symbolize that his authority came from his own accomplishments and the people, not the Church.
Following the ceremony, a grand banquet was held. This was accompanied by numerous celebrations, including street theater, greasy poles (mâts de cocagne), and impromptu dance halls filled with guests.
