Princess Isabella Hedwig Franziska Natalie of Croÿ (27 February 1856 – 5 September 1931) was by birth a member of the House of Croÿ and by marriage member of the House of Habsburg.
During WWI, Archduchess Isabella ran extensive network programs for the Austro-Hungarian Red Cross and specialized military hospitals. Because the Polish Legions fought alongside the Austro-Hungarian forces against the Russian Empire, thousands of Polish casualties were treated directly under her sponsored medical funds and charities. This medal was designed as an artistic monument to immortalize that exact relationship.
