In 1561, when Duke Alfonso d'Este arrived in Modena, the city's chancellor and humanist Giovanni Maria Barbieri formally coined or emphasized the motto (AVIA PERVIA = "making the difficult simple") to honor the ruler's ability to clear obstacles and guide the community through complex challenges.
During the War of the Spanish Succession, French forces under Louis XIV occupied Modena from August 1703 until February 1707, forcing Duke Rinaldo d'Este to flee until Imperial victories allowed his restoration.
