Duncan, Stratton & Co. was founded in Bombay in 1876, originally starting under the name of F.W. Shallis. The British-run colonial engineering and agency firm specialized in heavy industrial machinery, importing and supplying equipment for cotton ginning, pressing, seed processing, and regional infrastructure.
In 1905, they famously negotiated and ordered advanced coin-minting presses from Greenwood & Batley of Leeds on behalf of the Nizam of Hyderabad's mint. Trial pieces and tokens stamped with "Duncan Stratton & Co. Bombay" and an Indian tiger motif were struck during these machinery tests.
Greenwood & Batley were a large engineering manufacturer with a wide range of products, including armaments, electrical engineering, and printing and milling machinery. They also produced a range of battery-electric railway locomotives under the brand name Greenbat. The works was in Armley, Leeds, UK.
