The Monnaie de Paris issued in 2017 a silver 10 euro coin as part of its series dedicated to the Chinese lunar calendar, celebrating for this edition the Year of the Rooster. This issue is part of the French numismatic tradition of honouring the world's great cultures through quality commemorative strikes.
The coin features a Belle Épreuve (BE) strike quality, a process characterised by meticulous polishing of the dies and blanks, offering a striking contrast between the matte reliefs and mirror backgrounds. This level of finish is one of the most demanding standards in the field of coin minting.
Regarding its metallic composition, the coin is made of silver with a fineness of 900‰, an alloy composed of 90% pure silver. It has a weight of 22.2 grams and a diameter of 37 millimetres. The coin was struck at the Paris Mint workshop A, identifiable by its characteristic hallmark.
Its face value is 10 euros, legal tender in the French Republic. The mintage of this issue is limited to 5,000 pieces, making it a relatively rare coin in the contemporary French numismatic landscape.
The rooster, the tenth sign of the Chinese zodiac, is depicted here according to the traditional iconographic codes associated with this animal in Asian culture. Furthermore, the rooster also holds a strong symbolic link with France, where it has served as a national emblem for many centuries, giving this coin a particularly notable dual symbolic dimension.
