Médaille French Mint 2020 UNC

The Colourised Baby Smurf medal belongs to the series of medals dedicated to the iconic universe of the Smurfs, the comic strip characters created by Belgian cartoonist Peyo (Pierre Culliford) in 1958. Baby Smurf, one of the most recognisable characters in the franchise, is here celebrated through a colour representation applied to the relief of the medal.

The colourisation technique used on this medal faithfully reproduces the characteristic colours of the character, including the emblematic blue of his skin and the white of his hat, visual elements immediately associated with Peyo's graphic universe. This colouring process enhances the striking work by adding an extra chromatic dimension to the relief representation of the character.

This type of medal falls into the category of thematic collectible medals, linked to popular cultural licences. The Smurfs universe, which has enjoyed considerable international reach through comic books, animated television series and cinema, is a collecting theme particularly followed by thematic numismatic enthusiasts as well as collectors attached to this fictional universe.

Baby Smurf as a subject of representation has distinctive graphic characteristics: a chubby body, a childlike expression and a slightly drooping white hat — all elements that require precise engraving work to be faithfully rendered in the context of a coin or medal strike. The colourisation complements this work by highlighting the various planes and anatomical details of the character.

This medal thus represents an object at the crossroads of numismatics and the collection of merchandise linked to the heritage of Franco-Belgian comics, a field in which the Smurfs have held a leading position for more than six decades.
