Issued in 2021 by the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa, this 3 Canadian dollar coin belongs to a series dedicated to Canada's wild flowers. It honours the Pink Lady's Slipper, one of the most iconic terrestrial orchids of the Canadian flora, recognisable by its slipper-shaped flower whose characteristic pink and white hues are rendered here through a coloured enamel technique.
The reverse of the coin features a detailed illustration of the Pink Lady's Slipper, whose floral nuances are reproduced with precision through the application of coloured enamel directly onto the metal. This process faithfully captures the natural appearance of the plant, with its elongated brownish-purple petals framing the bright pink pouch-shaped labellum, characteristic of the species Cypripedium acaule.
The obverse of the coin bears the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of England and the Commonwealth, in accordance with the numismatic standards in force for Canadian issues of this period.
The coin is struck in pure silver at 999.9‰, a fineness corresponding to the highest purity commonly used in collector numismatics. It has a diameter of 27 mm and a weight of 7.96 grams. The strike is produced in Proof (PR) finish, a process guaranteeing mirror surfaces contrasting with the frosted relief of the designs, lending the coin a particularly refined quality of finish.
The mintage of this issue is limited to 4,000 pieces, making it a coin with restricted distribution in the field of contemporary Canadian collector numismatics.
