Billet Mauritania 5000 ouguiya 2011 UNC

This 5000 Ouguiya banknote was issued by Mauritania and bears the date of 28 November 2011. It belongs to the FC series and represents the highest denomination in the Mauritanian monetary system, the ouguiya having been the national currency of the country since 1973, when it replaced the CFA franc.

The Mauritanian ouguiya has the distinctive feature of being one of the few currencies in the world whose subdivision system is based on a unit of five, with the khoum representing one fifth of an ouguiya, unlike the decimal system adopted by the vast majority of nations.

The 5000 Ouguiya banknote is the highest denomination in circulation in Mauritania during this period of issue. Mauritanian banknotes of this series generally feature iconographic elements linked to the cultural, historical and natural identity of the country, including architectural representations of the ancient city of Chinguetti, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, desert motifs characteristic of the Sahara which covers a large part of the national territory, as well as references to the country's economic activity, particularly related to livestock farming and fishing.

The issue is placed under the authority of the Central Bank of Mauritania, the institution responsible for monetary policy and the management of the country's currency in circulation. The date of 28 November 2011 inscribed on this banknote corresponds to the Mauritanian national holiday, commemorating the country's independence proclaimed on 28 November 1960 from France, which gives this banknote a particular symbolic dimension beyond its simple function as legal tender.

This banknote belongs to the FC series, a designation used to identify and distinguish the different series of issue within the national fiduciary production, thus facilitating the control and management of the money supply in circulation.
