ROMAN REPUBLIC - C. Minucius Augurinus
AR Denarius - silver - Rome Mint - 135 BC
Obv.: Helmeted head of Roma right; below chin, value X; behind, ROMA
Rev.: Ionic honorary column of L. Minucius Augurinus surmounted by togate statue, holding staff in right hand; on either side, togate figure and ear of barley on forepart of lion; left togatus with bowl and loaf of bread, left foot on modius; to right, veiled togatus with lituus; above, C·A – VG
Condition remark: A very attractive coin with nice details on the reverse. Some slight roughness on reverse in the right field. Fine patina with hints of irridescence.
Historic context: The mint master is probably the brother of the subsequent T. Minucius C.f. Augurinus. The column of honor shown was erected in front of the Porta Trigemina for L. Minucius Esquilinus, who fought a famine in 439 BC as Praefectus annonae ("prefect of the provisions"). M. Minucius Faesus (with lituus) was the first plebeian to be elected augur in 300 BC.(Source: "Die Münzen der Römischen Republik" by Rainer Albert)
