Roman Empire - Gordianus III - Antoninianus - silver - Rome - 241-243 AD
Obverse: Cuirassed, draped and radiate bust of Gordian III facing right: IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG
Reverse: Hercules, nude, standing right, resting his right hand on his hip and resting his left hand on a club set on a rock; a lion-skin beside the club: VIRTVTI AVGVSTI
Provenance: Ex coin dealer (AT)
Condition remarks: An attractive coin of good silver with an exceptional portrait of Gordian III, where even his small moustache can be seen. Better in the hand than in the photos.
Note: Virtus was a specific virtue in Ancient Rome. It carries connotations of valour, manliness, excellence, courage, character and worth, perceived as masculine strengths. It was thus a frequently stated virtue of Roman emperors, and in this case personified as Hercules.
