Netherlands, Haarlem, N.D. (c. 1740) — Silver Town Council Attendance Token — Vroedschapspenning

Obverse

A seated female figure holds a token in her extended right hand, with a basket of tokens resting on her lap. Her left forefinger is raised to her lips, while her arm rests beside a book inscribed S C, placed upon a pedestal bearing Haarlem’s coat of arms.

Legend: COMES CONSILIORUM.
On the pedestal: VICIT VIM / VIRTUS.
In the exergue: HARLEM.

Reverse

Helmeted Minerva, personifying Haarlem, seated with a shield bearing Medusa’s head and holding a model of the ship of Damiate. Her foot rests upon a vessel inscribed SPARE, referring to the River Spaarne. A printing press and printing types spilling into compartments appear beside her; damaged fortifications and a banner occupy the background.

Legend: ARTE ET MARTE — “Through art and arms.”

In the exergue: DAM: CAPT: TYP: INV: / URB: DEFEN:, referring to the capture of Damiate, the invention of printing and the defence of the city.
