Netherlands — Wilhelmina Silver Coin Brooch, 2½ Gulden 1938, with Crown Surmount, circa 1940–1950
A brooch fashioned from a Dutch silver rijksdaalder dated 1938. The field surrounding Queen Wilhelmina’s portrait has been cut away, retaining her profile within the original outer ring bearing WILHELMINA KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN.
A separately applied crown surmount completes the design. The reverse retains portions of the original Dutch arms, inscription and date, and is fitted with a hinged pin and hook catch.
Comparable brooches made from openwork Wilhelmina rijksdaalders are documented in Dutch museum collections. This type of coin jewellery was associated with loyalty to the royal house during the German occupation and remained popular after liberation. The individual history of this example is unknown.
