Netherlands — Wilhelmina Silver Coin Pendant, Cut from a 2½ Gulden 1939, with Crown Surmount
An openwork pendant fashioned from a Dutch silver rijksdaalder dated 1939. The field surrounding Queen Wilhelmina’s portrait has been cut away, retaining her profile within the original outer ring bearing WILHELMINA KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN.
A separately applied crown surmount supports the suspension eye and ring. The reverse retains portions of the original crowned Dutch arms, inscription and date.
Probably made during the Second World War. Comparable jewellery fashioned from Wilhelmina coins is documented as an expression of loyalty to the Dutch royal house and silent protest during the German occupation. The precise production date and wartime use of this individual pendant are not documented.
Base coin: Netherlands, 2½ gulden 1939, KM 165.
Coin metal: .720 silver; fineness of the added fittings unspecified.
Gross weight: 19.83 g.
Original coin diameter: 38 mm, excluding crown and suspension.
