Netherlands — Pair of “Blyheidt–Vryheidt” Costume Buttons, Late 18th Century
A matching pair of Dutch costume buttons depicting the personification of Liberty holding a staff surmounted by a liberty cap, beside a pedestal. The surrounding inscription reads BLYHEIDT – VRYHEIDT.
Each button has a raised design bordered by a prominent beaded circle and an outer corded rim. The thin sheet construction leaves the design visible in recessed mirror image on the reverse. Both retain a centrally attached fastening eye.
A closely related silver button with the same inscription and a corded border is recorded in the Fries Museum collection, inventory T1955-0770A, dated 1700–1799. The Netherlands Costume Society also illustrates an example of this type dated 1784.
Probably late 18th century. The imagery is associated with Dutch liberty symbolism and the Patriot period, although this button type continued in use in regional costume.
Diameter: approximately 30 mm each.
Weight: 2.35 g each; combined weight 4.70 g.
Metal: Silver
