Netherlands — Two Decorative Coin Forks with Wilhelmina Silver Coins, 1924–1941

Two decorative three-pronged forks incorporating pierced Dutch silver coins from the reign of Queen Wilhelmina, offered together as one lot.

The larger fork incorporates a 1938 rijksdaalder (2½ gulden) within the fork head and a 1931 gulden at the handle terminal. It has a spiral-twisted stem, scroll ornaments and spherical decorative details.

The smaller fork incorporates a 1924 gulden within the fork head and a 1941 silver 25-cent coin at the handle terminal. Its stem consists of intertwined strands, with corresponding scroll and spherical ornaments.

The fields surrounding Wilhelmina’s portraits have been cut away, retaining the profiles and much of the surrounding inscriptions. Each fork has a long central prong flanked by two curved outer prongs.

Larger fork: 185 mm; 59 g.
Smaller fork: 170 mm; 27 g.
Combined weight: 86 g.

The rijksdaalder and gulden coin types were issued in .720 silver; the 25-cent type in .640 silver. These are the documented original coin standards. The materials of the stems, prongs and connecting ornaments have not been independently established. No hallmarks are identifiable.

The larger fork was assembled no earlier than 1938 and the smaller no earlier than 1941. Their precise date of manufacture and maker remain undetermined. Related objects incorporating Wilhelmina coins are documented from the German occupation of the Netherlands, although a wartime origin has not been established for these examples.
