German States — Bracelet with Patriotic Composition — Five Silver Talers, Featuring Wilhelm I and Augusta
Coin bracelet incorporating five German silver talers from Anhalt-Bernburg, Frankfurt, Prussia and Saxony. The centrepiece is the Prussian coronation taler of Wilhelm I and Augusta, dated 1861, set within a decorative scrollwork frame. The individual coin mounts are joined by links, with spherical ornaments between the settings.
The coins are mounted with their contrasting pictorial sides facing outwards. Starting from the coin depicting the bear, the sequence comprises:
- Anhalt-Bernburg, Alexander Carl — mining taler, type issued in 1846, 1852 and 1855. Crowned bear walking along a battlemented wall with a gateway; the other side bears the inscription SEGEN DES ANHALT. BERGBAUES. The date is partially obscured by the clasp component and has not been fully established. AKS 16.
- Free City of Frankfurt — commemorative taler 1863, Congress of German Princes. View of the Römer with a carriage and figures; the other side displays the city eagle and the denomination EIN GEDENKTHALER.
- Prussia, Wilhelm I and Augusta — coronation taler 1861. Conjoined crowned portraits in coronation robes; the other side displays the Prussian eagle, crowned monograms and SUUM CUIQUE. Issued to commemorate their coronation as King and Queen of Prussia at Königsberg. AKS 116.
- Prussia, Wilhelm I — victory taler 1871. Enthroned Borussia with crown, shield and sword; the other side features the king’s portrait. AKS 118.
- Saxony, Johann — victory taler 1871. Winged genius on horseback carrying a banner; the other side features the portrait of King Johann. AKS 159.
The two victory talers commemorate the victory over France in 1870–1871. Their combination with the prominently displayed Prussian royal couple suggests a deliberate patriotic composition. The bracelet may have been assembled to commemorate German unification in 1871, although no specific occasion is documented.
Dimensions: approximately 170 mm long and up to approximately 46 mm wide.
Materials and dating: the identified coin types were issued in silver. The materials of the settings, links, ornaments and clasp have not been independently established. The bracelet could not have been assembled before 1871; the precise date of the mounts and assembly remains undetermined.
