Netherlands – “1598”, Early 19th-Century Restitution – Philip II of Spain, Aged 71 – After a Design Traditionally Attributed to Conrad Bloc

Obverse
Half-length portrait of Philip II facing left, wearing a tall fluted cap, ruff, fur-lined mantle and the badge of the Order of the Golden Fleece. He holds a sceptre in his right hand. Legend: PHS II DEI GRA HISP INDI NEAPO SICI SARDI REX A° 1598 ÆTA SVÆ 71. Beneath the bust: CON. BLOC. F.

Reverse
Large crowned composite royal arms, including the Portuguese escutcheon, surrounded by the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Legend: DOMINVS MIHI ADIVTOR.

An early nineteenth-century struck restitution of the medal portraying Philip II in 1598, aged 71. The reproduced Conrad Bloc signature does not establish manufacture by Bloc. Smolderen distinguished this struck version from the earlier cast model and associated its production with the nineteenth-century medal issues at Utrecht.
