France. Louis XIV. “Solis Qve Labores” Medal Celebrating Military Victories. Undated, after Chéron
Obverse: Draped and armoured bust of Louis XIV facing right, wearing a long curled wig and lace cravat. Legend: LVDOVICVS · MAGNVS · FRANC · ET · NAV · REX · P · P.
Reverse: Louis XIV represented as the radiant sun god Apollo, driving a horse-drawn chariot through clouds. Above: SOLIS QVE LABORES. Around, twelve ornamental cartouches containing fortress plans, accompanied by the names of Nijmegen, Grave, Zaltbommel, Orsoy, Rheinberg, Wesel, Emmerich, Huningue, Arnhem, Doesburg, Zutphen and Deventer.
An unsigned variant of the design attributed to Charles Jean François Chéron, glorifying Louis XIV’s military victories through his identification with the sun. The twelve fortified places surround the royal sun chariot in an arrangement recalling the zodiac.
An illustrated example of this variant, likewise measuring 61 mm and featuring the expanded obverse legend and Huningue on the reverse, appeared in Baldwin’s Auction 63, lot 1303 (2009), described as a cast medal.
