Germany, Pomerania-Wolgast. Memorial Piece for Philipp Julius, Bearing the Date 1625

Obverse: Bust of Philipp Julius facing right, wearing a broad lace collar and a draped mantle fastened with a rosette at the shoulder. Surrounding inscription naming the duke and his titles, corresponding to PHILIPPVS IVLIVS D G DVX STET POM CASSV ET VAN.

Reverse: Acorn above a ten-line Latin memorial inscription recording his birth on 27 December 1584 and death on 6 February 1625, and naming his cousin and successor Bogislaw XIV. Portions of the inscription are indistinct or incomplete at the perimeter.

The design corresponds to the funeral thaler issue commissioned by Bogislaw XIV and struck at Franzburg following the death of Philipp Julius, the last duke of the Wolgast branch of the Pomeranian ducal house.

The manufacture of this example has not been established. Its surface and rounded details suggest casting, but its precise production date remains undetermined. The date 1625 refers to the commemorated death and does not establish when this particular piece was made.

Weight: 21.2 g.
Diameter: 46 mm.
