Netherlands. Capture of Breda, 1637 — Uniface Reproduction after Johannes Looff, Probably an Electrotype
Uniface reproduction of the reverse of Johannes Looff’s medal commemorating the recapture of Breda by Frederik Hendrik in 1637. Date of manufacture unknown.
Obverse: A crowned shield bearing a lion above a cartouche containing a Latin inscription beginning D·O·M·S / Bredam and ending with the date X·Octob·An·M·DC·XXXVII and S·P·Q·F·B. The whole surrounded by elaborate vine scrolls, grape bunches and fruit.
Reverse: Unfinished back with the corresponding design visible in negative relief and a granular, locally nodular surface.
The inscription recalls Breda’s association with the nobles’ confederacy, its capture by Maurice through the peat-barge stratagem, Spinola’s siege and its subsequent recovery by Frederik Hendrik.
The thin shell construction and reverse surface suggest galvanoplastic manufacture. The date 1637 belongs to the original medal design; the production date of this reproduction has not been established.
Weight: 7.8 g.
Diameter: 68 mm.
