Netherlands. 1940. Philips van Marnix van Sint-Aldegonde — 400th Birth Anniversary Medal by Han Wezelaar. VPK 1940, First Medal.

Diameter 59.7 mm. Brown-patinated metal; provisionally identified as bronze.

Obverse: Three-quarter-facing bust of Marnix towards the left, wearing a ruff and fur-trimmed mantle. Legend PHILIPS VAN MARNIX VAN ST. ALDEGONDE 1540–1940. Signed W below the right shoulder.

Reverse: A sailing ship on stormy seas, assailed by personified winds, with rocks in the distance and a dolphin-like creature in the foreground. Above, rays surround the Hebrew divine name and a Greek Christogram. Below, a ribbon bears Marnix’s motto REPOS AILLEVRS — “Rest is elsewhere”. VPK monogram at lower left.

Designed by H.M. “Han” Wezelaar and produced by Koninklijke Begeer, Voorschoten. Issued as the Vereniging voor Penningkunst’s first medal of 1940, in cooperation with the national committee commemorating Marnix.

The reverse draws upon Marnix’s personal emblematic imagery. Its motto expresses the belief that ultimate rest lies beyond earthly life.

Approximately Extremely Fine, with brown patina, light rubbing on raised details, minor surface marks and a few small green spots. Please examine the photographs for your own assessment.
