Historical Context – 14th Inter-Parliamentary Union Conference, London 1906
The 14th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Conference took place in London in 1906. Founded in 1889 by William Randal Cremer and Frédéric Passy, the IPU brought together parliamentarians from many nations to promote arbitration and peaceful methods of resolving international disputes. By 1906, its annual meetings had become important diplomatic forums for legislators across Europe and beyond.
The United Kingdom hosted the conference at the Palace of Westminster, the home of the British Parliament and one of the earliest institutional supporters of the IPU. At this time, Edward VII was king of the United Kingdom. His reign (1901–1910) was widely associated with improved diplomatic relations in Europe, particularly the Entente Cordiale of 1904, and he was popularly known as “The Peacemaker,” a title that appears on the medal.
The medal commemorating the 1906 conference features engraving attributed to A. Wyon, a member of the prominent Wyon family of British medallists. Its reverse records the event and location: the XIV Conference of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Palace of Westminster, 1906. Delegates at IPU meetings commonly received official badges, though surviving examples from 1906—especially gilt and enamel versions—are significantly rarer than the medals themselves. As a result, a matching medal-and-badge set from the 1906 conference is considered notably scarce among surviving artefacts.
