Historical context:
The "Fêtes de la Madeleine" is an annual religious and folkloric festival celebrated in Jumet (Charleroi), Belgium. The tradition dates back to the 14th century and commemorates Saint Mary Magdalene, with a procession that has become a significant cultural event for the region. This 1946 medal, designed by Darville, was dedicated to Franz Wangermée, a prominent local figure, by his friends and admirers. The obverse depicts a cavalryman, a reference to the military and folkloric groups that take part in the procession. The reverse shows the church of Heigne, one of the central places connected to the festival.
