Historical Context:
The Société Internationale Forestière et Minière du Congo (Forminière) was founded in 1906 and became one of the most important colonial companies in the Belgian Congo. It was especially active in diamond mining and forestry. This medal was issued in 1956 for the company’s 50th anniversary. The obverse refers to its charitable activities in the Kasai region, explicitly named “Le berceau du Kasaï.” The reverse illustrates labour in different sectors of production, centred on a stylised gemstone symbolising diamond mining. Designed and signed by G.A. Brunet, the piece represents Belgian medallic art commemorating colonial economic enterprises of the mid-20th century.
