Historical Context:
This medal commemorates the launch or christening of the Belgian merchant ship M.S. Prince Philippe, constructed in 1940 by the Cockerill shipyard in Hoboken, Belgium. The ship was named after Prince Philippe, Count of Flanders (1837–1905), who was the younger brother of King Leopold II and uncle to King Albert I. The medal reflects both royal patronage and industrial pride in Belgian shipbuilding at the eve of World War II.
