Thierry V Bayer of Boppard, bishop of Metz (1365–1383), issued coinage

to assert his temporal authority in a politically fragmented region. By minting

his own deniers and gros, he strengthened episcopal control over trade and

secured revenues for governance and defense. His coin production drew on

taxes, tolls, and payments from Metz’s merchants, which supplied the silver

needed for the mint.
