This coin has one of the lowest total mintages (1400) of any commemorative issue of the German Empire. The planned mintage of 10,000 was aborted due to the incomplete title in the obverse inscription.
Most of the Proofs produced had only the reverse with mirrored fields. This is a presentation coin with full, deep mirrors and satiny details on BOTH sides. The contrast is SO extreme that we had expected a DCAM grade. The only thing holding this exceptional coin back from a higher grade is a trace of some faint, stray hairlines. There are also some very light and tiny shiny spots on the highest points of the portraits, from cabinet wear.
This is by far the finest and most attractive example of this rare coin I have ever seen in over 30 years of dealing in German Empire Proofs and should have been given a "DCAM" grade.
All of our photos are of the actual coin on offer.
