Gustav III, King of Sweden from 1771 to 1792, was a visionary leader known for his cultural reforms and support of the arts. He founded the Swedish Academy and promoted literature, theater, and music. Gustav implemented political reforms to strengthen royal power, but his autocratic style led to conflicts with the nobility. His foreign policy focused on enhancing Sweden's position in Europe. Gustav III was tragically assassinated during a masquerade ball in 1792, an event that inspired Giuseppe Verdi's opera Un Ballo in Maschera.
