The November Revolution of 1918 was a pivotal moment in German history that led to the end of the monarchy and the establishment of the Weimar Republic. At the end of World War I, as Germany teetered on the brink of military defeat, discontent among the population and the military grew. On November 3, 1918, a rebellion broke out at the naval base in Kiel, where sailors revolted against poor living conditions and the continuation of the war.
The unrest quickly spread to other cities, leading to mass demonstrations and strikes. The Social Democrats, led by Friedrich Ebert, sought to maintain control by forming a new government, while more radical groups, like the Spartacist League, aimed for a socialist revolution.
On November 9, 1918, Emperor Wilhelm II abdicated, and the German Republic was proclaimed. These revolutionary changes led to a period of political instability and economic troubles, resulting in the rise of extremist parties, including the Nazis. The November Revolution marked the beginning of a new era in Germany, characterized by the struggle for democracy and social justice.
