Princess Charlotte of Wales (1796–1817) was the only daughter of George IV, then the Prince of Wales, and Caroline of Brunswick. As the granddaughter of King George III, she was seen as the heir to the British throne and a symbol of hope for the kingdom’s future.
Charlotte grew up in a tense family environment due to her parents' troubled marriage. In 1816, she married Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg, a popular union with the public. The couple was beloved, and their marriage was seen as a fresh start for the monarchy. Tragically, Charlotte’s life was cut short when she died in 1817 after giving birth to a stillborn son.
Her death shocked Britain, and the national mourning was immense. She was seen as the future of the British monarchy, and her untimely death caused a succession crisis that indirectly led to the birth of Queen Victoria. Charlotte's brief life and tragic end made her an iconic figure in British history, remembered as a symbol of hope taken far too soon.
