France Denarius 751-768 Saint-Martin de Tours Pépin le Bref, Saint-Martin de Tours, Silver VF(30-35)

Prijsbieding

France, Pepin I le Bref (752-768), Denarius, Saint-Martin de Tours, VF(30-35), Silver, Monograms Pi under a tilde, Rx and FR under another tilde, Legend SCS / MAR, An extremely rare denarius, where the legend on 2 lines SCS/MAR can be linked to Saint-Martin de Tours. However, other mints, such as Saint-Marcel in Chalon-sur-Saône in the Côte-d'Or or Saint-Maurice, may also be associated with this denarius. With this type of obverse with its unusual monogram, this example should be compared with the denarius from the OGN-Numismatique sale on 18 June 2009 (Lot 62), whose reverse legend is on one line: SCI under a tilde and MAR under a second tilde. The latter, of better quality but equally rare, sold for €9500 excluding costs.
