Louis XIV
PCGS
Laureate head of Louis XIV aged, to right., Cross formed of four crowned lilies, flanked by four Ls, bearing the mint letter in heart within a circle., Graded PCGS MS62 Flan réformé, Extremely rare variety of the Louis d'or au 4 L struck on a reformed flan, for the Strasbourg mint with the obverse legend IVD instead of LVD! Some have suggested that it could be a satirical legend, with IVD for Judas, but Clairand disputes this, suggesting instead that the I hallmarks were reused to replace the L hallmark, which the mint was missing at the time of engraving, This specimen has passed through the Emile Bourgey sale, Paris 23 June 1954, lot 48 and the Theodor Voltz collection, Munzen & Medaillen Basel 82 sale, 25-26 March 1996, lot 656,, IVD·XIII·D·G· (sun) FR·ET·NAV·REX·, CHRS REGN VINC IMP
