Naked and childlike bust of Louis XV on the right., Cross formed of eight L's leaning against each other and crowned, cantoned by four lis and bearing a sun in heart., Graded PCGS Genuine Filed rims-AU Detail. Exceedingly rare coin, of which only one exemple is in circulation in private hands would be currently known for the mint of Aix-en-Provence, this exemple. Another one also exists for the Montpellier mint, which we also offered for sale (ref. 868441).Ultimately, only 4 examples survived until today, two from the Montpellier mint and two from the Aix mint. Of these four, one from each mint is held in public collections, including the Aix example currently held by the BNF's Département des Monnaies et Médailles (BnF, MMA, G431), struck with the same dies as our example. These very few surviving examples demonstrate that, despite its defects, this coin is of the highest rarity.Our Aix exemple as been set in a mount to be worn as jewellery, which has crushed the edge over its entire surface. The flan has been heavily cleaned and shows numerous scratches. Strong marks are visible on the mint letter, the date and the sun on the reverse. We also note some slight adjustment marks on the obverse. This exceptional coin is in fact a hybrid of a reverse die of the Louis d'or au soleil (Gad. 256 / Clairand 33033) coupled with the new obverse die representing the little Louis XV aged 5 years, made by the general engraver Norbert Roëttiers. The very short strike of this type lasted only two months, from November to December 1715. It was quickly replaced by the Louis d'or aux Insignes, so that the rare examples already produced were melted down, hence the exceptionnal rarity of this fascinating transitional coinage, witness to the history of the first months of the accession to the throne of the new king Louis XV.
