Mirza Fatali Akhundov (1812–1878), also known as Akhundzade, was a pioneering Azerbaijani writer, playwright, philosopher, and public intellectual who founded modern Azerbaijani drama and literary criticism.
Born on 12 July 1812 in Nukha (present-day Sheki), Azerbaijan, then part of the Russian Empire, Akhundov was raised largely by his maternal uncle, a prominent Muslim cleric who intended him for a religious career. A decisive encounter with the poet and freethinker Mirza Shafi Vazeh turned him toward secular learning and European ideas. In 1834 he moved to Tiflis (Tbilisi), where he served for decades as a translator of Oriental languages in the Russian administration of the Caucasus, rising to the rank of colonel.
Akhundov’s literary breakthrough came in the 1850s with a series of six comedies written in the Azerbaijani language. Works such as The Adventures of the Vizier of the Khan of Lankaran and Haji Qara satirized superstition, ignorance, clerical hypocrisy, and social injustice with sharp realism and colloquial dialogue. He was often called the “Muslim Molière.” In 1857 he published the novella The Deceived Stars, considered the first realistic prose work in Azerbaijani literature. He also advocated alphabet reform, proposing changes to the Arabic-based script and later a Latin alphabet to raise literacy.
A committed Enlightenment thinker, Akhundov criticized religious dogma and promoted reason, science, and national progress while remaining loyal to the Russian state as a force for modernization. He died in Tiflis on 9 March 1878 (10 March New Style).
Through his plays, prose, and philosophical writings, Akhundov laid the foundations of modern Azerbaijani literature and the broader Turkic-Muslim theatrical tradition, earning lasting recognition as a key figure of the Azerbaijani Enlightenment.
