Mirza Alakbar Sabir (1862–1911), born Alakbar Zeynalabdin oglu Tahirzadeh, was a leading Azerbaijani satirical poet whose sharp verse helped modernize national literature and gave voice to social criticism under the Russian Empire.
Born on 30 May 1862 in the city of Shamakhi, Sabir grew up in a religious merchant family that initially favored traditional Islamic education. He first attended a mullah school, where he learned Arabic and Persian, before studying at the progressive new-method school founded by the poet Seyid Azim Shirvani. Encouraged by his teacher, he began writing poetry at a young age, initially in classical forms.
After early travels through Central Asia and Iran, and a period of struggling to support a large family through various jobs including teaching and soap-making, Sabir turned decisively to satire. His first published poem appeared in 1903. From 1906 onward he became one of the most active contributors to the influential satirical magazine Molla Nasraddin, writing under pen names such as Sabir (“the patient one”) and Hop-Hop. In simple, colloquial Azerbaijani, he attacked religious hypocrisy, official corruption, ignorance, the oppression of women, and political stagnation, while calling for enlightenment and social progress.
Despite poverty, illness, and the demands of family life, Sabir continued writing until the end. He died on 12 July 1911 in Shamakhi at the age of 49 and was buried in the Seven Domes Cemetery. A year later his friends published the collection Hophopname, which secured his lasting fame.
Sabir’s realistic, socially engaged satire broke with older poetic traditions and inspired later generations of writers across the Caucasus and beyond. He remains one of the most beloved and influential figures in Azerbaijani literature.
