Vladimir Vladimirovich Mayakovsky (1893–1930)
Vladimir Vladimirovich Mayakovsky was one of the most influential Russian poets of the 20th century, a leading figure of Russian Futurism, and the most prominent poetic voice of the early Soviet era.
Born on 19 July 1893 in Baghdati (then in the Russian Empire, now Georgia), Mayakovsky moved to Moscow with his family after his father’s death in 1906. As a teenager he became involved in revolutionary politics, joined the Bolsheviks, and was repeatedly arrested. During one of his imprisonments he began writing poetry. In 1911 he entered an art school in Moscow, where he met David Burliuk and joined the Cubo-Futurist movement. In 1912 he co-signed the famous Futurist manifesto A Slap in the Face of Public Taste.
His early masterpieces — A Cloud in Trousers (1915), The Backbone Flute (1916), and Man (1918) — combined radical formal innovation with intense lyricism and social rebellion. After the 1917 Revolution, Mayakovsky wholeheartedly supported the new Soviet state. He produced agitational poetry, posters for ROSTA (the Russian Telegraph Agency), and celebrated works such as Ode to the Revolution, Left March, 150,000,000, and the long poem Vladimir Ilyich Lenin (1924). He also wrote plays, including Mystery-Bouffe and the satirical The Bedbug and The Bathhouse.
Despite his official status, Mayakovsky grew increasingly disillusioned with bureaucratic constraints and personal difficulties. On 14 April 1930, at the age of 36, he died by suicide in Moscow.
Mayakovsky remains a towering and controversial figure in Russian literature — celebrated for his powerful voice, formal boldness, and the unmatched energy he brought to revolutionary poetry.
